London Biggin Hill airport's chairman Andrew Walters and his son, commercial director Robert Walters, are being named fellows of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS), marking the first time two family members have been honoured by the society on the same day.

Fellowship is a highly coveted honour that is bestowed on those who have made an outstanding contribution to the aerospace sector, including taking on significant responsibility in their roles.

A former military and civil aviation pilot, Andrew Walters' career spans over 50 years. He acquired the former Royal Air Force base at Biggin Hill in 1994, before working with his son Robert on turning it into a dedicated, full-service business aviation airport and a centre for aviation technology and enterprise.

David Edwards, CEO of The Royal Aeronautical Society, says: “It gives me enormous pleasure for the society to recognise Andrew and Robert Walters, two key members of the business aviation industry. Their stewardship of London Biggin Hill airport, particularly in terms of careers, training and apprenticeships, has brought significant investment and skilled jobs into the region, and their work representing the entire airport sector, especially through the pandemic, is notable. I look forward to their input into our society as our newest fellows.”

Andrew Walters says: “It's a true honour to receive the fellowship of the Royal Aeronautical Society, which has recognised pioneering figures throughout the history of our industry. Such recognition will only prompt us to redouble our efforts to innovate and attract people and businesses to the airport while continuing to balance our ambitious development plans, ensuring the needs of the local community here in Bromley are always considered.”

Robert Walters adds: “Decades of commitment to the aerospace sector have resulted in London Biggin Hill becoming a dedicated UK Point of Entry that is free of runway slot constraints. Our many initiatives and passionate team have led us to be London's leading full-service business aviation airport, and I'm humbled to have had this work recognised by the Royal Aeronautical Society.”
