Gulfstream G280 demonstrates operations at London City Airport

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. today announced that the Gulfstream G280 has been certified for steep approach operations by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Israel (CAAI). The airplane recently flew several takeoffs and landings at London City Airport, the final step to obtain approval from the London City Airport operations and control department to operate at the British airport near the city's financial district.

“The ability to operate at London City gives our G280 operators quick access to one of the world's great financial centers as well as the Gulfstream sales and design center in nearby central London,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president, worldwide sales, Gulfstream. “From London City, this powerful mid-size aircraft offers nonstop access to all of Europe and northern Africa.”

In order to fly in and out of London City, an aircraft must be certified for steep approaches. Additionally, the flight crew must demonstrate proficiency on the 5.5-degree approach and must be able to operate from the airport's short runway; 4,327 feet/1,319 meters for landing and 3,937 ft/1,200 m for takeoff. The jet must also meet strict noise requirements.

The G280 successfully completed its first flight on December 11, 2009, and was certified by the CAAI and the FAA in September 2012.

Powered by two Honeywell HTF7250G engines, the G280 can reach speeds of up to Mach 0.85 and an altitude of 45,000 ft/13,716 m. At a long-range cruise speed of Mach 0.80, the G280 can fly four passengers nonstop up to 3,600 nautical miles/6,667 kilometers.

The G280 also has the most comfortable cabin in its class. Its large cabin cross section offers 19 panoramic windows and access to 120 cubic ft/3.4 cubic m of usable volume in the baggage compartment. With a choice of cabin configurations, the G280 accommodates up to 10 passengers and features ample aisle space and generous legroom and headroom.

The G280 flight deck features Gulfstream PlaneView280 avionics, with options for Enhanced Vision, Synthetic Vision and Link 2000+. The PlaneView280 system is designed to improve situational awareness and safety through its highly interactive controls and interfaces. Link 2000+ is an option that supports mandate requirements for operating in European airspace.
